  • Test your alarm a few weeks before going away on holiday
  • Advise your security company that you are going away and supply information re. keyholders.
  • Ensure that a security company officer who responds to your alarm can access your property.
  • Be discreet about going away: don't pack the car in full view of the street.
  • Inform your neighbours or street leader of your holiday plans and ask them to keep an eye on your property.
  • Stop newspaper deliveries; ask a friend or neighbour to clear your postbox.
  • Double-check that all windows and doors have been locked and secured.
  • Ensure that security gates are fitted on all outer doors.
  • Ensure that sliding doors or gates can't be lifted vertically.
  • Install outside lighting, preferably on a timer that senses movement.
  • Do not leave garden tools outside or in an unlocked shed - they can be used to break into your house.
