We welcome our two Metro Law Enforcement Officers – Nobuntu Makamba and Zolisa Libazi. Councillor Thomas has secured their services free of charge at this stage, and we are very grateful for that.

They are supervised by Inspector Wally Panday who will serve as our link through to Metro Law Enforcement and their specialised units tackling drugs, displaced people and moving traffic offences.

They will be involved in enforcing Metro By-Laws such as street trading, public misbehaviour, noise and stationary traffic offences such as parking, missing number plates and expired licence discs.

Just to remind you it is an offence to park on a red line, on a yellow line, within five metres of a road junction or a stop street, facing the wrong way and obstructing a pavement. We recognise that many of us do not have garages and have no choice but to park on the streets some of which are narrow. The Officers will be lenient around this issue.

But Zolisa has already told me of a resident parked on a yellow line who, when asked to move on, stated that she had been parking there for 20 years and didn’t see why she should!

If you are forced to park on a pavement because of the width of the road outside your house, please do so in a way that does not completely block the pavement for pedestrians.
