OBSID’s Safe Home service
The service is available to anyone within the OBSID borders to make use of – any time of the day. Should you feel unsafe whilst or before travelling from point A to point B in Obs, please phone Vetus Schola Public Safety for an escort.
021 – 447 -1066 Vetus Schola will be at the meeting point in front of the Tattoo Shop on Lower Main Road, for escorts from Monday to Sunday at 21:15, 23:15 & 00:15
If you require an escort at a different time of day – please phone them in advance to make arrangements. The patroller will walk behind you, or follow you with the patrol vehicle to make sure you arrive at your destination safely.
OBSID advises especially females to take advantage of this service – even when travelling in groups. Better safe than sorry!
When you see a SUSPICIOUS CHARACTERPlease phone 021- 447-1066.
Even if you’re not sure if he/she’s a criminal ‘he just looks like he’s up to no good’. This is often the way criminals are caught! Public Safety (Vetus Schola) can ask some questions and detain the suspect for SAPS if need be.
REPORTING INCIDENCES helps US keep YOU safe
No matter how big or small, please report all crimes. If you let us know we can deploy security officers to ‘hotspots’. The OBSID Safety committee analyzes the stats we get from our Public Safety, Google groups and reports to the OBSID office to identify high crime areas and address them – be it through lighting, cameras, public safety or SAPS.
SAPS are not able (allowed) to provide us with updated stats and we can only help the community when we know where the problems are. OBSID and Vetus Schola also have a ‘Rogues Gallery’ available which residents can view at our offices if they need to point out a trouble-maker.
COPPER PIPE thief caught
A ‘minor’ type of theft left several residents with spraying water-pipes! Through community teamwork and reporting OBSID, the ONW and SAPS were able to catch the copper pipe thief!
CAR BATTERIES being stolen
Car batteries are making their way out of Obs cars’ engines. If you see someone scratching under a hood – please phone VS on 021-447-1066. If it’s the owner of the car he won’t mind you looking out for his best interest!
SCAM artists entering your house
Many reports have been received from residents who were foiled into letting a stranger into their house – and afterwards realizing items like wallets and cell phones missing.
Please be aware that these men pose as: Eskom worker (complete with uniform), Tree Trimmer OR House-sitter for your neighbor. Please phone VS immediately – do not tell them that you know who they are! To catch them and stop them, we need residents to report and tell VS to come immediately. They have the descriptions of these perps.
Being asked for directions
There have been reports locally and in neighbouring areas of a car stopping to ask pedestrians for directions – they then rob the pedestrian. When walking at night – whether you’re a large group, male or female – please make use of the OBSID’s Safe Home service. Contact the safety office on 021-447 1066.
