Improvement District - OBSID NEWS

The Cape Town City Council has conditionally approved our application to become an improvement district.

There were 6 objections, mostly from pensioners on the grounds of affordability, but particularly from one resident, who has gone out of her way to thwart our formation. I have not been able to make this announcement until I felt that everything had been done to alleviate this threat. However, I believe that the way forward is now clear.

In terms of the City rules, Obsid has to be run by a Section 21 Company, administered by a board of directors with a manager employed by the company to carry out day to day running.  Every ratepayer, paying the levy, can become a member of the Section 21 and thus vote. However, to do so they have to apply for membership of the company. The form is available for download from  www.obs.org.za and at the library.

The members will meet soon to elect a board of nine directors. The nominations received are: Brian Amery, Justin Ashley, David Raphael, Bovain MacNab, Andrew Fife (with Jonathan Endersby as Alternate), Natalie Leon, Kris Marais, Gareth Leyman, Richard Burnett and Edwin Angless. Anyone wishing to stand or to nominate a director should email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or fax details to 086 672 0079 before 15th June. If you wish to nominate a director, be sure to get their approval beforehand.

There is still a window period of formalities before funding is received, but the OBSID is expected to be up and running in the Spring. We have already received some messages of congratulation but the one that stands out for me says, “I can’t wait to live in a beautiful, clean, safe Obs!!!”  My sentiments exactly.
