Improvement District

A City Improvement District is a Special Rating Area established by agreement of businesses and/or residents in a particular area to ‘top up’ services provided by the City Council. The City will charge a SRA levy over and above the normal rates charges, payable by all ratepayers in the area. Among the extra services provided by a CID are security and cleansing. The OBSID  includes both a residential and a commercial component.

Obsid recently obtained permission to use a vacant plot between Molenviet Rd and the freeway for vegetable allotments. We have 8 large allotments available - each one being 3m by 9m which is twice the size of the average in the UK. With the rains now upon us its the time to start growing your own veggies. This is especially aimed at obs residents who do not have gardens, so if you are interested please contact the Obsid Office, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. New Obsid levies 2010/2011 PDF Print E-mail

The council has published the levies for the new financial year starting on July 1st.

The Obsid's budget has been increased by 8%, but as a result of the new valuations kicking in the new levies have dropped as follows:

Residential This year .001211 Next year .001119

Commercial This year .001556 Next year .001379

I have not received the new valuations yet as they have not been finalised but it appears that there was some growth in commercial values and a lesser growth in residential values. I will publicise the totals when I get them in due course.

Previously the arithmetic was easy, for a R1m house you paid R100 per month. Now for a R1m house you will pay R93.25 per month, but the likelihood is that your valuation will have gone up.

So the maths is: take your valuation (say R1,234,567) multiply by .001119 and divide by 12 = R115.12 monthly levy.

station_road_toiletsThe OBSID's promise to make Obs 'Cleaner' and 'Smarter' is bearing some fruit.

The public toilets at the cnr of Station and Arnold streets has long been an eyesore. Cleared of the tags/graffiti and attendant smears and scent markings it looks brand new.

We welcome our two Metro Law Enforcement Officers – Nobuntu Makamba and Zolisa Libazi. Councillor Thomas has secured their services free of charge at this stage, and we are very grateful for that.

They are supervised by Inspector Wally Panday who will serve as our link through to Metro Law Enforcement and their specialised units tackling drugs, displaced people and moving traffic offences.
